Oct/Nov/Dec 2007 Contest

"Home For the Holidays"

Was won by Veronica Davidson of Veronica's Lavish Lathers!

For the cardinal electric candle I used the basic shell mold and hand painted the shell with acrylic crafting paint. These shells are scented with Balsam Fir from Candles and Supplies.com.  First wipe off the shell with rubbing alcohol to remove any residue. Then paint your design.  Do not over lap images because once the bulb is lit inside the shell you will see ghost images.  The holly leaf electric candle I made sure to paint each holly leaf leaving space between each so when the candle is lit you can see the different holly leaves.   Once your paint is dry spray a thin layer of crystal clear krylon glaze to set the paint and prevent it from peeling.   I wish I would have gotten a photo of the pine cone painted electric candle but that sold as soon as I brought it out of the lab.  With that one I simply painted pine cones with snow using the “snow accents” paint which is a super thick lumpy paint.  I used it as well on the branches on the electric cardinal shell.

To make the drip effect on the holly berry electric candle I melted the wax and let a skin form on the top then dipped a knife into the wax and as the warm wax formed on the tip of the knife I dragged that across the rim of the electric candle shell and continued around till the entire rim was covered.  Then to smooth out that rim I used a heat gun on low and just went all around the top letting the wax drip down the sides of the shell.

In the spring I make these in blue scented in baby powder or lavender, pink is scented typically in fresh cut roses (all from candles and supplies) Yellow I scent in daffodil.
